Coffee Conversation: I’m Late to the Party

Coffee Conversation

If you should know only one thing about me, it’s this: you cut me, I bleed coffee. So when Jamie of The Perpetual Page-Turner published an article entitled “If We Were Having Coffee,” a while back now, I did an instant-click. And boy was it good. It’s thoughtful and personal, just like the title suggests, and offers a conversational vibe wherein it presents the blogger as more a person. Someone you can talk to about mundane things.

I thought it’s a really nice way to reach out to your readers and engage them, get to know them a bit deeper. So today, I am doing my own Coffee Conversation. Grab your coffee (or tea or milk or bourbon, whatever you fancy) and let’s catch up!

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I finished Galgorithm by Aaron Karo the other night and thought it was a fun, light read. Before that, I read Virginia Boecker’s The Witch Hunter and it was fantastic! The MC has a strong voice and there are well-written supporting characters. But what I really loved about it was the romance! This came as a shock as I’m not usually into this element but I really enjoyed the journey. You need this book on your radar! Then, I’d ask you what was the last book you read and was it good.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I watched the latest Game of Thrones episode (or should I use “episodes”? Oops)! And while I think the premiere was a bit tamed—albeit understandably so, since the last season’s finale was a whirlwind—I’m intrigued to find out where the story is headed, because up until now I’ve only managed Book 3. Also, go Sansa! Then, I’d ask you if you’ve seen the premiere already. Or more importantly, if you are tuning in to the show.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that waiting for the eagles carrying Becky Albertalli’s Simon Vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda to arrive here in the Philippines is proving to be a mega pain in the arse. But if there’s a consolation, it’s Becky, who’s super lovely. Then, I’d ask you what was the last book you cannot get your hands on fast enough.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that these days I’m having a hard time focusing on things. I don’t know if it has something to do with my new companion, namely eyeglasses, or the fact that I’m in a phase where significant parts of my life are shifting. I got accepted in a cruise line company and I’m grateful and excited but I also know that this will affect my blog—which is a major part of who I am—decidedly and tremendously. Then, I’d ask you how you usually face change.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’m currently obsessed with Sam Smith’s Lay Me Down. (Well, yeah, obviously I’m late to the party.) Then, I’d ask you what is the song that’s on a loop in your phone or head.

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I forced encouraged my best friend to read Paper Towns and she was totally sold! I think small victories like this one gives me so much happiness because I put a story that matters to me in the hands of a person who matters to me. Then, I’d ask you if this happened to you recently and what’s the book and who’s the person involved.

If we were having coffee, what would you want to share with me? Come on, the barista is too busy to eavesdrop.

  1. Book I can’t wait to get my hands on: Fallout (Lois Lane) by Gwenda Bond. Been on a huge superhero kick lately. My copy is on the way, but it was shipped to my parents’ house on accident, so delivery will be delayed. Other than that, just wrapping up my last semester. And I had no sentimental attachment to my high school, but I really am going to miss this place.

    1. I’ve always wanted to get into superhero books but dang graphic novels are too expensive! And that sucks. Shipment delay, I mean. Hmm. I think no matter what they say about high school we’re always going to miss it one way or another.

      Thanks for dropping by Shannon!

  2. Confession: I don’t actually drink coffee. Whoops! Possibly some lemonade. *clinks glass*

I’ve watched the premiere! A little disappointed that Arya hasn’t shown up yet, but that’ll be in this week’s episode, I’ve heard. Loved Kevan’s brief appearance — hopefully he’ll play more of a role in this season, ‘cos he’s one of my fav Lannisters. (Hell, he’s one of the few more decent Lannisters. They’re practically the family of evil.)

    1. I love lemonade, too! Cheers!

Oh yeah. Arya appears in ep 02 onwards. Funny you should mention Kevan, ’cause if I didn’t read the books, I don’t think he had much of a role in the past seasons. But that maybe is just me. My favorite part has to be Tyrion and Vary’s exchanges (as always). And oh. Cersei’s flashback!

      Thanks for dropping by Alyssa!

  3. I am definitely going to have to jump on this “Coffee Conversations” thing. It’s so great! If we were having coffee, I would say that I too have been distracted, but differently. I haven’t read an entire physical book in a month. The only thing I can focus on are audiobooks.

Oh, and the audiobook for The Help is hilarious and perfect.

  4. Hm, is it giving you too much work commenting on old posts? Like, is that a “no, don’t do that” thing?

If we were having coffee, I would tell you that:
    1. The last book I read was The Heir by Kiera Cass. I enjoyed it. As much as some said that she was a brat, I found her funny, and interesting.

    2. I didn’t see the premiere, nor do I watch the show. I don’t have a Starz subscription, which is the channel the show is aired in America, last time I checked.

    3. That would have to be FANS. I was very happy when it came in the mall. I may, or may not have jumped around and squealed.

    4. I relate so closely to this. These days, I can never focus for too long. When I do, I am so stressed out by some recent changes, that I feel like I am constantly spinning around with my fingers on my temples; noise just a faint, yet roaring echo in the background, only hearing my own shuddering breathing, and trying to dismiss a pounding headache. I would tell you that I wish you well on your latest endeavour with a faint nostalgic smile, and it’s alright if you ever need to take time away to figure things out, and I’m here if you need to rant.

When I used to be able to handle extra change, I would probably make accountability charts for how my time should be spent and figure out how to adjust it into my schedule. I would sit with some chamomile tea, and take some time to just think over life, and various topics. Nowadays, I’ll take any method of escape: reading, getting other work done, or just lying down for a few hours or days.

    6. Recently, I’ve convinced Skylar & Aisha to read MHTN, and they’ve DM’d me their thoughts (Aisha is currently reading) and it makes me so so SO happy. They are friends, online and I would tell you I was glad to hear your friend enjoyed PT.

    1. No, it’s cool, Wesaun. And thank you! How sweet of you to read my old entries and leave a thoughtful, long comment. ❤ I hope you're fine with my rather short responses; I just don't do long comments.

I wanted to read The Selection series before, but I watched this Epic Reads clip and—yeah, nope nope. I think you'd like GoT tho. And Fans! Aaaaah, that book! Also? What you said about change is poetic. And I’m all for creating schedules. Sadly, I completely suck at sticking to them. And hooray for successful book recs! Props for it being MHTN, too. 🙂
